Maurizio Cattelan came to the field of art via an eclectic background he often cites in his work. Beginning in the late 90s, he took as his subject modes of communication, ranging from the magazine to publicity, to the exhibition itself as a medium. He has often transmitted his own image, in wax effigy, plaster, print, and other materials. Cattelan is the publisher of Permanent Food, Charley, and Toilet Paper. He is co-owner of the Wrong Gallery and Family Business, in New York, and has supported the work of countless younger artists as a mentor, publisher, curator, and collector.
